Individualization key in weight loss program

Unless you’re looking for a quick fix (that usually doesn’t exist), remember that losing weight and maintaining weight loss requires lifestyle changes in diet, exercise and the behaviors associated with these habits.

While ultimately weight loss is dependent on those main areas, there are many different challenges we all face. For example, some of you may have challenges because you eat out often, you don’t know how to cook healthy meals, or you don’t like vegetables or fruits very much. Others may have different challenges. And a few don’t have any challenges.

Because most of us have different challenges, individualization is extremely important in a weight management program. “One size fits all” doesn’t apply. When you’re designing your weight management plan, do an inventory of your strengths and challenges. Write down what you do well, such as eat plenty of vegetables. Recognize and rely on your strengths.

This will give you confidence and help you carry out your plan. Also, write down your challenges and obstacles. Then do some problem solving and come up with specific strategies to help deal with these obstacles. The more honest you are with yourself, both in recognizing your obstacles and coming up with realistic strategies, the greater the likelihood you’ll succeed.

In “The Mayo Clinic Diet” book there’s an Action Guide that lists many different obstacles and strategies on how to address them. This may help you on your weight loss journey. We’re designing a new healthy living program at Mayo Clinic that will include a weight management component.

Is a calorie always a calorie?

It’s been said for years that body weight ultimately depends on the balance between calories eaten and calories burned. Recently, this premise has been questioned as other factors have emerged that may affect weight.

For example, studies have shown that people who sleep less than 6 hours or more than 8 hours are at increased risk of weight gain. Factors affecting our weight may start even before we are born. Small babies that are born to expectant mothers who don’t get adequate nutrition are at increased risk of weight gain later in life.

On the calorie intake side, a recent study reported that sugar intake increased the risk of obesity more in people who had a genetic predisposition to obesity. Another study reported that a low-fat diet lowered resting metabolic rate more than a low-carbohydrate diet. In this case, it’s not clear differences in dietary fat vs. carbohydrate transmit into changes in weight. A long-term study showed that after 2 years there wasn’t much difference in weight loss between a low-fat and a low-carbohydrate diet.

How do these factors affect weight independent from calories? It’s possible they may affect metabolic processes or hormones in the body. Despite these associations with weight, it’s important to keep the big picture in mind and not get too caught up with specific factors and details.

For example, there is some controversy over whether high-fructose corn syrup can somehow increase weight more than what is expected from its calorie content. However, the calorie content and the amount of high fructose corn syrup people eat have a much, much greater influence on weight than any other potential effect may have.

If people can change these factors, such as getting the right amount of sleep, it might help to better manage weight. However, the big picture is still that eating a healthy diet, which limits calories appropriately, along with increased physical activity is the most effective overall way to manage weight — and improve health long-term.

Tips to save time, eat healthy and exercise regularly

We live in a busy world and few people have too much time on their hands. This makes living a healthy lifestyle and managing weight challenging, because it takes time and effort. So, how can we more effectively manage weight in this busy world we live in?

It helps to have the right perspective. For almost all of us, I’d suggest it isn’t time that prevents us from making efforts, it’s priorities. Achieving a healthy weight can help improve health in many ways, improve quality of life, and help us live longer. What could be more important than that?

Although it takes time to implement healthy lifestyle habits, the return on investment is tremendous — which makes the time investment worth it.

Another helpful item is to look at managing weight not as something “extra” to do, but rather a part of our everyday lifestyle. Just as we eat and sleep every day, we should get some type of physical activity every day, whether it’s exercise, activities throughout the day or both.

Taking time to seek out and prepare or purchase healthy, low-calorie food should also be part of our lifestyle, just like brushing our teeth. This doesn’t mean you need to spend hours in the kitchen or gym. And some days are certainly tighter than others.

But there are strategies you can employ to make healthy weight management part of your life. At first, it will take a little longer, just like it takes longer to make a recipe you’ve never made before.

But as time goes on, it becomes more second nature to eat well and be active. For example, many people say they don’t feel right if they don’t get regular physical activity.

Here are some ways to save time but still eat healthy and get regular physical activity:

  • Keep staples on hand for quick, healthy meals. At our house, we can quickly make Greek salads, bean burritos, and whole wheat pasta with red sauce and vegetables because we try and keep the ingredients in the house.
  • Look for excuses to walk during the day. Walk while talking on the phone, walk after lunch or better yet — to and from lunch. Walk to talk to a colleague instead of emailing, park a little farther away — you’ve heard that one before, but have you tried it? Calories burned can add up quickly.
  • Buy prepackaged salads, frozen vegetables, canned no-fat beans, canned tuna and other healthy convenience foods for a pinch.
  • Set a time to get exercise or other physical activity and stick to it. Put it in pen on your regular schedule — it’s more important than almost anything else you do.

Can-do attitude, action plan key to weight loss resolutions

It’s long past the time to make New Year’s resolutions, but it isn’t too late to assess how you’re doing on the ones you made. Weight loss is one of the more popular resolutions, and one of the more challenging ones to continue.

Now is the time of year when you experience the many obstacles of sustaining health behavior changes to promote weight loss. Good intentions to begin the year require renewed vigor to reach your goals.

So, what can help keep you on track? Before going there, let’s look at some things you should consider when you’re beginning a weight loss program. Is this a good time in your life to do this? Are you able to commit the time? Or, are there things going on in your life that you need to attend to first? There are other similar considerations outlined in Chapter 1 of our book “The Mayo Clinic Diet”.

Once you decide to make a commitment to continue your weight loss efforts, then you can identify obstacles you may be experiencing and consider solutions and strategies to deal with them. These obstacles may include time pressures or something more specific such as portion control. The important point is there are many obstacles, they vary for each of us, and the strategies to overcome them may vary individually as well.

When undertaking weight loss, everyone experiences obstacles and challenges. Expect them and use problem solving behaviors to address them. For every obstacle, there are strategies and potential solutions. They may not be perfect, but something can be done. By approaching obstacles in this manner, you can adopt a can-do attitude, which will make you much more likely to achieve your goals.

Beginning on page 180 in “The Mayo Clinic Diet”, there’s an action guide that describes many different obstacles in nutrition, physical activity, and behavioral change along with strategies on how to deal with them. Fewer calories, healthy food best weight-loss plan

Everyone knows decreasing calorie intake is the key to effective weight loss. However, there are many ways to lower calorie intake, some healthier than others. The total number of calories will determine how much weight you lose. The type of calories you eat will determine how healthy the dietary program is.

Let’s use an extreme example. If you eat 1,200 calories per day, you should lose weight. If those calories come only from jelly beans (that’s a lot of jelly beans!), it won’t be a very healthy way to lose weight. Jelly beans contain calories but very few vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients the body needs.

The Mayo Clinic Diet also recommends 1,200 calories for women under 250 pounds who want to lose weight. In contrast to jelly beans, however, when people follow the Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight Pyramid, they will eat generous amounts of vegetables and fruits, whole grain carbohydrates, lean sources of protein, heart healthy fats, and just a small amount of a sweet, such as jelly beans.

These types of foods contain vitamins, minerals, fiber, and many other nutrients and phytonutrients (different types of nutrients found in plants). These types of foods have a tremendous amount of evidence supporting their beneficial effects on health.

There are many different types of diets in existence. To promote effective weight loss, they should lower calorie intake. To promote good health, they should include a variety of healthy food choices.

New weight loss guidelines to help you navigate new year

We’re well into the new year and if you made a resolution to lose weight you may find yourself being tested. So, what’s new this year that might help you?

In late 2013, new guidelines on the management of obesity were jointly released by The Obesity Society, The American Heart Association and The American College of Cardiology.

A standardized process was used and many different research studies were reviewed to arrive at evidence-based recommendations for weight management. In other words, there’s a lot of scientific proof behind these guidelines, not just what some people believe might be the best way to lose weight.

Guidelines on the management of obesity have not been updated since 1998, so what’s new about this report? Well, in some ways not a lot. The guidelines reaffirm that calories count and the best treatment program to help lose weight should include tried-and-true lifestyle changes in diet, physical activity and behavior change for at least 6 months. In other words, there’s still no magic bullet for weight loss.

Some parts of the guidelines deserve highlighting. One is that there are health benefits from weight loss of as little as 3 percent to 5 percent, which should be encouraging to you. Beyond that amount, the greater the weight loss, the greater the benefits.

They also note there’s not one best diet for weight loss. This is more good news in that you can choose a diet that appeals to you. However, the diet should be nutritionally adequate, sustainable over time and help manage other risk factors if present, such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.

Another feature is that a weight loss program can be delivered electronically. Some commercial programs are also an option. Finally, the guidelines mention that a long-term (at least one year) maintenance program is the best way to keep weight off.
